The Collect

² In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.  ³The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

⁴Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.  ⁵On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”  ⁶So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, ⁷and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?”  ⁸Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

⁹Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”  ¹⁰While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.  ¹¹The Lord said to Moses, ¹²“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’” 

¹³That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.  ¹⁴When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.  ¹⁵When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.  Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.”
 

⁶Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.  ⁷Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  ⁸And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.  ⁹As it is written:
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.” [a]
¹⁰Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.  ¹¹You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

³⁰The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  ³¹Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
³²So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.  ³³But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.  ³⁴When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.  ³⁵By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late.  ³⁶Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
³⁷But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”  They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages [a] ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”  ³⁸“How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”  When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.”  ³⁹Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.  ⁴⁰So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.  ⁴¹Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.  ⁴²They all ate and were satisfied, ⁴³and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.  ⁴⁴The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Post Communion

Lord Jesus Christ, you have fed us with the bread of life
and refreshed us with your grace:
send us out to serve you with joyful hearts,
that we may share your generosity with all who hunger in body or spirit;
for your mercy’s sake. Amen
