New leaders in our parishes: Linda and Rachel

Rachel Harrison-FrenchHello! I’m really looking forward to joining the parishes of Bickleigh and Shaugh Prior as a part-time ordinand on placement. I’m training with CMS on their Ordained Pioneer pathway and am studying for an MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission.

I live in Sherford with my husband John, and we have three grown-up children. I’m a qualified primary school teacher and, following five years working in the not-for-profit sector around food equity and community food sharing, I now work as Company Secretary for our family business in the fire protection industry.

I’m particularly interested in how the church connects with the communities around us, and in finding simple, creative ways of sharing faith and caring for creation. I love being outdoors, usually with a dog somewhere nearby, and I’m happiest when church involves people, conversation, food and a bit of mud!

Most of all, I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone, sharing in the life of the parishes and seeing where God is already at work among us.

Rachel Harrison-French

Linda SmithI was ordained in Truro Cathedral in 1999 and served my curacy in Looe, Cornwall. I was Priest in Charge for the neighbouring parishes of Talland, Pelynt and Lanreath until I moved to South Oxfordshire in 2009 to be Vicar in a Team Ministry near Henley on Thames.

Alongside parish ministry I have also served as a Vocations Advisor and Area Dean. Since retiring to Plymouth I have been delighted to be able to develop further my interest in Spiritual Direction and I am currently an Assistant Tutor on the Spiritus College Spiritual Direction Course. I’m equally delighted to have found this lovely parish where I’ve had such a warm welcome.

I’m married to Bill and we have three daughters and five gorgeous grandchildren. I love seaside walks and cream teas, beautiful gardens and the wildness of the moors. Seems like I’ve found the perfect place to be!

Revd. Linda Smith

There were a number of requests by church members and members of the public to organise a second screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing film with a discussion afterwards. Perhaps some of you who have seen it in September would like to see it again and bring a friend or neighbour.

Reserve your seat here.

Building stronger connections with Bickleigh Down

Collective worship at Bickleigh Down primary school has been going well and I have been able to start a lunchtime ‘reflective space’ on a Friday too. The next step towards building community with the school is to host tea and cake after school on a Friday (not ideal for us I know but the only slot school have…)

I would like to encourage people to sign up to:
a) Make cakes
b) Serve tea
c) Help with some games/activities/ chatting to families.
Please note that I will have role descriptions for these roles and where appropriate we will
need to safely recruit people to, particularly role c.

I would love us to be able to start this on 16th October then 23rd which is the start of half term, then weekly from 6th November.

Restarting St Cecilia’s

I would like those interested in forming a core group to start meeting to pray. Initial dates: 25/10, 8/11, 22/11, then break in December and start again Jan 10th by which point I would like us to be able to bring in others from school to start meeting too. The idea is to bring in families who seem interested in helping us plan what worship might look like to help us formulate the right way to start this new worshipping community.

Editor needed

I am looking for a volunteer or a team as a job share who could take over editing and sending out this weekly newsletter, an essential source of information to keep us feel connected and informed about what’s going on. Don’t worry if you haven’t done this before, I can show you the ropes!

Collect

Eternal God,
We thank you for the glory of your creation – a mystery that surpasses our knowledge.
Eternal God,
We thank you for the earth and water, sun and wind, creatures and peoples – cultures – nations:
Guide us as we gather to confess that we have violated the gift of life given to us.
Strengthen us as we seek to affirm that the earth and all therein is yours.
Enable us as we seek to recall your covenant and make it our own. Amen.

Psalm 19

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God;
    and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
    and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
    their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
    and their words to the end of the world.

In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
    and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
    and its circuit to the end of them;
    and nothing is hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
    reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
    making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
    enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
    and drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is your servant warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can detect their errors?
    Clear me from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;
    do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
    and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be acceptable to you,
    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

               This is the word of the Lord.
               All:  Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading

               Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke

               All:  Glory to you, O Lord.

Mark 4:26-31

26 He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’

30 He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth;

               This is the Gospel of the Lord.
               All:  Praise to you, O Christ.
